We can do better South Carolina

After almost 900 weekly columns totaling more than 600,000 words over the last 17 years, I’m like the Farmers Insurance guy – I’ve seen a thing or two in South Carolina. And I’ve learned a thing or two about how politics, policy, and governance works – and doesn’t – in the Palmetto State. Now as we head toward the 2020 elections, maybe it’s time to share some of the bigger lessons. The work starts with sections about the changing American South and a look at debates on how to re-enthrall the region and country with engaging in the common good. Then we highlight some inspiring stories of South Carolina leaders as well as civil rights struggles with which the Palmetto State continues to grapple. Next are commentaries on politics, governments, the hangovers of South Carolina’s past and her future opportunities. Finally, we end with several policy columns related to Statehouse Report’s continuing push for state lawmakers to adopt a broad agenda for reform throughout government. We hope you will see how South Carolina is doing and invite you to join our quest to move the state forward. We can—as the title suggests
